Tips for Taking Passport Photos
Let Someone Else Take Your Photo
The best quality is achieved if you have someone else take your picture. Of course, you can also create the passport photo using a selfie.
Lighting
For good lighting, it is best to take the photo in daylight. Make sure your face is evenly lit.
Pay Attention to Distance
Keep your front camera about 40 cm away from your face. If you use the rear camera, you can take the photo from a distance of 1-2 meters.
Straight and Upright Gaze
Look directly into the camera and avoid tilting your body. Remember that photos taken with portrait mode are not permitted.
Background
The background must be plain and light-colored (ideally neutral gray), and no shadows should appear on the background.
Headgear
Head coverings are generally not permitted. Exceptions may be made, particularly for religious reasons.
Facial Expression
The person must look straight into the camera with a neutral expression and closed mouth.
Glasses Wearers
The eyes must be clearly visible. Reflections on the lenses of glasses, tinted glasses or sunglasses are not permitted.

Product Details
You will receive 2 photo sheets (prints) in the format 10 x 15 cm.
On one sheet, 4 biometric or non-biometric photos will be printed in the size required for the document selected in the app.
On the second sheet, you will receive an enlargement of your passport photo as well as an overview of the criteria we consider (according to ICAO) and a QR code to download the digital passport photo.
Legal Requirements for Biometric Passport Photos
General Information
For official identification documents, the photo must not be older than 6 months at the time of application.
Format
The photo must be taken in portrait format (35x45mm). The head must occupy ⅔ of the image and be centrally positioned.
Sharpness and contrast
The face must be sharp, clear, and well-defined throughout the entire image.
Photo quality
The photo must be of high print quality and should be printed on premium glossy paper without any surface texture (e.g., no patterns or textured surfaces). It must not have any scratches, spots, stamps, or creases. The "red-eye" effect is also not permitted.
Background
The background must be plain and light, providing adequate contrast with the face. Only one face should be visible in the photo.
Lighting
The face is required to be evenly illuminated/lit: No shadows or reflections are permitted (such as those happening on glasses)
Head positioning and facial expression
The face must be captured front-on with a neutral expression; no smiling or showing teeth. Other poses are not allowed.
Eyes - Gaze direction
The person in the photo should look directly at the camera with eyes open and clearly visible - no hair covering any part of eyes nose or mouth on the face.
Glasses wearers
The eyes must be clearly visible without any reflections on glasses lenses. Tinted glasses and sunglasses are not allowed, and the glasses frames must not cover the eyes.
Head covering
Head coverings are not permitted unless for religious reasons. In such cases, the face must be clearly visible from the bottom of the chin to the forehead without any shadows.
Children
The child must be the only person in the photo. The face must be fully visible, and the eyes must be open.
Black and white photographs
Black and white photographs are not accepted for Passports (Reispass), ID cards (Personalausweis) or residence permits (Aufenhaltstiel).

Scan the QR code and print passport photo set
After you have completed the order for your passport photo in the app, you will receive a QR code. With this code, you can easily print your biometric photo at any dm or Müller store in Austria. Go to a CEWE Photostation and scan the QR code from the app. Your passport photo set will now be added to your shopping cart.
Confirm the general terms and conditions and start the printing process. Take the printout to the checkout. On the check sheet, you will also receive a QR code with which you can download the passport photo digitally as well.
